The Shocking Revelation of Dress

 The Shocking Revelation of Dress.

Dress is a costume produced by professional tailors to fit in the human body. The creation of dress is a form of detail oriented art. Each design's value changes from time to time. It is hard to record the changes because they are fragmented and indecipherable, as there is no proper evidence of where this form of art originated.

History of dress

Civilization and evolution had a huge impact on the fashion industry. We are now left behind with statues, paintings and excerpts of legendary fashion mongers for us to find out about dress evolution. The significance of dress changes are based on many factors and mainly due to political and social stances.

Based on Journal of Dress History (volume 2, issue 3, Autumn 2018), the first dress making school was The Brigitta School  in Sweden (1910-1930) directed by Emy Fick and Elisabeth Glantzberg. During this era, many unmarried women engaged themselves into business like sewing for industriousness and virtue. New feminist views were booming and women begin to have their individuality.

Parallel with that point, Fick and Glantzberg came from different social backgrounds and both have different opinions on dress making. Fick was from the upper class household and keen in neat needle work and lace. On the other hand, Glantzberg was from the rural clergyman’s family and focused on preserving folk tradition on weaving. Therefore, they had different aesthetic values on dress.

Not long after, Fick and Glantzberg split up due to a conflict and opened their own dressmaking school. The evolution continued from here because there were many textile traders emerging and world war happened. Since then, there have been many rapid changes in dress fashion.

Present day dress fashion

Dress is now considered as a formal wear in most corporate and legislative levels as long as one follows the dressing code.

What is the shocking revelation of dress?

An array of surveys conducted on fashion psychology, it is found out that clothing choices on the way we perceive and judge one another show surprising results.

According to signalling theory, a male peacock will display his vibrant feathers  to attract a female to mate. Such rituals vary from species to species, but in humans, our ability to create and wear clothes gives us an equivalent advantage in being able to distinguish ourselves from a crowd and demonstrate our individuality in an effort to find a mate. Conversely, too, we might use clothing to merge into a crowd and hide our individuality by dressing in a uniform. This gives us another perspective for us to look at if the choice of colour plays an important role? The answer is YES.

Sometimes we may find someone demure and introvert, who chooses to wear a long black and white dress while people who are extroverted and boisterous, choose to wear colourful mini dresses. The length of dress shows one is confident of themselves. However, it is not necessarily accurate, some just feel uncomfortable wearing mini dresses due to their cultural background.

Wearing a dress is similar to breaking the stereotypes in our society. For example, we may have heard sentences such as the dress is too revealing, the dress is inappropriate for her age or the dress is too striking. When one wears a dress, she is able to change the view or to make others ponder on their point of view.
